Online,Telephone & Email Counselling

Online,Telephone & Email Counselling

Click on a tab to learn about each type of online or telephone counselling.

online counselling video chatVideo chat takes place using the same technology as audio chat and instant messaging, but also uses a web cam to take and receive live images and sound. Being able to see a person react to what you say may not be quite the same as being in the same room with them as in face-to-face counselling, but we think it represents the next best thing and is a boon if social or psychological demands prevent from taking a more traditional therapeutic route.

We can access you through any one of the freely available messaging programs you’re already using such as Skype, Google, Oovoo, FaceTime GoToMeeting etc, which means that you can concentrate on your counselling session rather than the vagaries of an unfamiliar program interface.

telephone counsellingAudio chat (also known as PC-to-PC or internet calling) is very similar in experience to making a normal telephone call – the only difference is the means by which that call is achieved. Audio chat requires the parties involved to connect via the internet using a microphone and speakers or headset.

You can access video chat via popular messaging programs such as Skype, Google, FaceTime etc. At The Therapy Hour, we want you to spend your counselling session engrossed in the work rather than trying to get to grips with a new messenger interface, so if you are already familiar with a particular messaging program, we are more than happy to use that.

email counsellingCounselling via email will suit you particularly well if you are self-directed, but value the input of an objective observer in your bid for personal change, growth or development. The considered pace of an email encourages reflection as it is written and contemplation as the response is read…and re-read.

Email counselling with The Therapy Hour involves you writing and sending an email outlining your concerns and feelings. You can write up to 1000 words* about anything you want and in any way that suits you – it’s your opportunity to explore what’s really happening in your life, how it makes you feel and why. We will usually agree a date/day on which you should send your email – you can send it before, but it won’t be read before the agreed date.

Your counsellor’s reply (a “Therapeutic Email” of about 500 words) will arrive in your inbox no later than 24 hours after the agreed date from sending your email (48 hours if the agreed date is a Friday or Saturday).

  • A viable alternative if you have hearing difficulties.

telephone counsellingIn a technology-driven age, the telephone represents something of a throwback. Counsellors and therapists worldwide are familiar with telephone counselling – we regularly use it during illness, bad weather and other emergencies. However, for many people, talking to a counsellor on the telephone represents far more than a second-best option – it’s a lifeline which is distant enough to provide objectivity, yet close enough to feel you’re not having to manage your problems alone. What’s more, the telephone is readily accessible, easy to use and reliable when compared to internet-based forms of counselling.

The staff providing services for The Therapy Hour are currently located in the UK, so you if you are located elsewhere, you will need to make an international call. The cheapest way to do this is to use a web-based chat service such as FaceTime or WhatsApp.

Benefits of Telephone Counselling

  • Requires no special equipment or learning curve – you just dial the number and speak.
  • You can hear your counsellor/coach.
  • Your personal circumstances may make it difficult or impossible to travel to face-to-face counselling, but telephone counselling is accessible from the comfort of your own home, or wherever you are.
  • Fits in with your schedule.
  • Offers a high degree of anonymity – particularly useful if you suffer from social anxiety.
  • No additional call charges if using wi-fi chat.
  • 3-way or group conference calls are available for couples and family groups.
  • If you relocate or travel, you will still have access to your preferred counsellor/coach.
